September 15, 2014 – After spending several years trying to break into Hollywood, working on shows like the CW’s “Everybody Hates Chris” and VH1′s “Flavor of Love,” North Carolina native, Shequeta Smith, recently beat out thousands of filmmakers to become one of the Top 20 finalists in HBO’s “Project Greenlight” Competition.

The newly revived Project Greenlight, HBO’s filmmaking documentary series, will be executive produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, executive producers of the original two seasons. Smith submitted a video bio in addition to a concept trailer for her upcoming feature film, “The Gestapo vs. Granny”; a comedy set inside of a retirement home that tells the story of Agnes Monroe, a cranky senior citizen who has infamously been kicked out of eighteen retirement homes.

Though beating out thousands to become the only African-American Top 20 finalist is impressive, Smith will have to make it as a Top 10 finalist in order to guarantee a spot on the HBO television series. The Top 20 voting round started on Monday, September 15, 2014 and lasts until Friday, September 26, 2014.

The one video that receives the most votes from the Project Greenlight community during the voting period will be automatically included into the final Top 10. The remaining nine video finalists will be selected by a group of film industry professionals — including Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The link for voting will be posted on Project Greenlight’s Facebook page on Monday September 15, 2014.

They say that the magic happens when you’re working outside of your comfort zone. Therefore, when film director Shequeta Smith received an e-mail from HBO’s Project Greenlight, requesting her to film a funny bio video, her comfort zone quickly went out of the window. Smith, who would usually be behind the camera directing, was now going to have to be the star.

Thousands of videos had been submitted over the previous month and Smith’s concept trailer “The Gestapo vs. Granny” had been selected into the Top 200.  If she wanted to make it to the Top 20, she was going to have to come up with something good and something fast.

The end result, a bikini laden rap video reminiscent of the hilarious Elle Woods (Legally Blonde) Harvard admission video. Like Elle, Smith made the cut and solidified her spot in the Top 20 for HBO’s Project Greenlight. Check out her clever rap in the video above.
